Servings: a small bowl
Cooking time: 30 minutes
- 2.5 cups tomato puree (blend 4-5 tomatoes in a blender jar to get 2.5 cups tomato puree/you can use store bought can also)
- 1 cup tomatoes chopped into small cubes / you can also use store bought crushed tomatoes)
- 3-4 cloves of garlic finely minced
- 2 tbsp of basil finely chopped
- 2 tbsp olive oil/any refined oil
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp black pepper powder
Take a deep pan or kadhai and add oil to it.When oil is hot enough add minced garlic in it and saute it for about a minute. Now add tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, salt, pepper and sugar in it. Mix it nicely.Keep the gas on medium heat.
Let the tomato simmer till it reduces and becomes little thick. Press the chopped tomatoes with the spatula to crush it a little bit. Keep stirring it in between so that it do not stick to the bottom of the pan.
As the tomato puree have thickened a little bit add basil and oregano in it and again simmer it till it thickens and you get a sauce like consistency.Keep stirring it in between. Once done switch off the gas and let it cool down completely. After cooling the sauce becomes little more thick so turn off the gas accordingly.
Homemade tomato basil sauce is ready. Pour the sauce in a glass jar and refrigerate it.It is good for about a week in refrigerator. Use in numerous dishes as per your choice like in pasta or as a pizza sauce or in any casserole dish or spoon it over your enchiladas or simply as a dip. This sauce is very versatile.
