  • 4-5 green chillies (you can adjust it according to taste)
  • 1 inch long ginger
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds(jeera)
  •  Pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder(haldi)
  • red chili powder to taste
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • curd 1/2 cup
  • 1 tbsp coriander leaves finely chopped for garnishing

Step 1: Take all the ingredients of gatta in a bowl and knead it to a smooth dough just like chapati dough.Use little water if required. Then taking small portions at a time roll the gattas as shown in the picture below

Step 2: Then take around 5-6 cups of water in a deep pan or kadhai and bring it to boil.Add a spoon of oil in the water and when water starts boiling then drop these rolled gattas in the water.Waters should be sufficient to cover all the gattas. Simmer for about 10 -15 minutes. You can take out small portion of gatta and check if it is cooked or not. When it is cooked properly then strain it with a help of strainer.Cut the rolls in small cubes and keep aside.

Step 3: Combine tomatoes, green chilies and ginger and blend it to form a smooth paste.Take oil in a kadhai and when oil is hot enough than add cumin seeds, when seeds begin to crackle then add asafoetida. Saute for few seconds then add tomato puree mixture.

Step 4: Add salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder to the gravy mixture and stir it well. Now cover it and cook until the gravy is cooked properly and leaves oil from the sides.

Step 5: Now add garam masala and mix nicely.Whisk the curd nicely and add it to the gravy. If the gravy is too dense then you can add water according to your preference.

Step 6: Drop all the prepared gattas in the gravy and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Then garnish with coriander and serve with any bread of your choice.Enjoy !!

Handy Tip:

If after cooking gattas have become little hard then don’t worry, when you will add them to the gravy and simmer it,then they will be soft again.
