Hello Friends,
Wish you all A Very Happy Diwali. I can’t believe its Diwali, my favorite time of the year. One can feel the happiness and festivity all around even a fortnight before Diwali. With cleaning of the complete home, lots of shopping , moms and grannies making sweets, I just can’t express my happiness, while I pen down this post.
I am sharing some traditional sweets and savory recipes for you all which are really very easy and takes no time at all. For some of you who don’t know much about Diwali, here is a little background about the festival, its history, its tradition and how it is celebrated through out India.
Diwali, or Deepawali, is India’s biggest and most important festival of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deep) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. It is also know as festival of lights. Over the centuries, Diwali has become a national festival that is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith. Hindus interpret the Diwali story based upon where they live:
- In northern India they celebrate the story of King Rama’s return to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana by lighting rows of clay lamps.
- Southern India celebrates it as the day that Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.
- In western India the festival marks the day that Lord Vishnu, the Preserver (one of the main gods of the Hindu trinity) sent the demon King Bali to rule the nether world.
- Deepavali is linked to the celebration of Lakshmi, who is venerated amongst Hindus as the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
In all interpretations, one common thread rings true—the festival marks the victory of good over evil.
Five Days of Diwali
On the first day of Diwali, which is know as Dhanteras people consider it auspicious to spring clean the home and shop for gold or kitchen utensils.
On the second day, people decorate their homes with clay lamps and create design patterns called rangoli on the floor using colored powders or sand.
The third day is the main day of the festival when families gather together for Lakshmi puja, a prayer to Goddess Lakshmi followed by mouth-watering feasts and firework festivities.
The fourth day is the first day of the new year when friends and relatives visit with gifts and best wishes for the season.
On the last day of Diwali, which is know as Bhai duj in which brothers visit their married sisters who welcome them with love and a lavish meal.

I very much enjoy your blog. I was thinking about celebrating Diwalli this year November 7th. I will invite two of my daughter’s vegetarian girlfriends and my husband and myself. For such a small group can you suggest a traditional main dish and two sides? I want to try the coconut Laddu from your site. Is there a dish so traditional everyone will be eating it? Like Turkey for American’s Thanksgiving feast? Thanks for taking time to share with me.
